Welcome
Welcome to the Whittlesea Fire Brigade.

The Whittlesea Fire Brigade provides its services to the community by volunteer personnel.

The Whittlesea Fire Brigade primary response area includes:
• Mt. Disappointment (southern end)
• Whittlesea Township
• Eden Park (including Merriang Rd)
• Humevale
• Toorourrong Reservoir
• Yan Yean (including Yan Yean Reservoir)

We act as support for other brigades in the area meaning that we cover a wide range of areas of dense Bushland, grazing/farmland and small urban development.

We have trained and have resources to attend Wildfires (bushfires and grassfires), Structure fires (house and factory fires), Car accidents and Hazardous material incidents (Oil spills and gas leaks).

The brigade is also trained as Emergency Medical Response (EMR) to events such as respiratory and cardiac arrest. This ensures that assistance can be provided to patients while ambulances are on the way.

Have you changed your Smoke Alarm battery?

Only working smoke alarms save lives

Did you know that while you are asleep you are unlikely to smell smoke? A working smoke alarm is vital to making sure you will wake up in the event of a fire.

CFA, together with MFB and Duracell recommends:

  • Using long-lasting 9V alkaline batteries in your smoke alarm - by doing this you ensure year-round protection
  • Using the brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner to dust around the smoke alarm

  • Installing photo-electric smoke alarms rather than ionisation smoke alarms where possible

  • Testing smoke alarms once a month using a broom handle - the alarm should produce a beeping sound when the test button is pressed

  • Replacing all smoke alarms (both battery powered and 240v hard-wired) after ten years (the year of manufacture is displayed on the alarm)

  • Purchasing smoke alarms that meet Australian Standards. Look for the AS3786 marking

For more information, visit www.changeyourbattery.com.au

Do your kids know what to do when the smoke alarm goes off?

Take some time to remind family members what actions to take if they smell smoke or see flames inside the home.

Simple actions like getting down low and crawling under smoke save lives, and every family should have a home fire escape plan that identifies all possible escape routes.

Smoke alarms for the hearing impaired

Special smoke alarms are available for the hearing impaired. These may feature a flashing strobe light, and/or a vibrating pad that can be placed under the pillow to activate when the alarm sounds.

Hearing impaired smoke alarms can link with standard smoke alarms to alert all household members, regardless of hearing levels. When one alarm senses smoke, all will activate.

Other models are portable units that can be taken from one residence to another.

Smoke Alarm Subsidy

Profoundly deaf people can apply for a smoke alarm subsidy to help cover the costs of visual and vibrating smoke alarms.

The subsidy scheme is available until June 2012 and is funded by the State Government. Details and application forms are available through the Victorian Deaf Society.

Brigade News - November/December

The (152nd) Whittlesea show is over for another year and brigade members volunteered for crewing fire appliances on the Saturday and with show parking on the Sunday, much needed funds were raised by generous donations from the visiting public and the show society.

Community education continues with the ‘Fire Safe Kids’ program and fire prevention meetings for land holders within the brigade area. The completion of the brigade’s new storage shed saw a recent clear out/inventory of the Laurel Street workshop, Eden Park station and track team shed. Work is being done to electronically scan brigade documents such as photographs and news clippings and in time this interesting historical content will be available for all to view on the brigade’s website in the new year!.

Happy Trails!

The Christmas season is here and thoughts turn to the annual camping trip, visiting friends and family or just a day trip here and there; tragic accidents can be avoided by taking a moment to consider the safety of family, friends and other holiday makers. In the car: be well rested before leaving, plan regular breaks, take advantage of free coffee and biscuits offered along highways, have your vehicle serviced prior to departure, secure your load properly and check it along the way, stick to speed limits (and the left lane) don’t tailgate and above all BE PATIENT in traffic. When you get there: practice water safety, directly supervise all swimmers, follow CFA advice on fire restrictions/bans/safety and listen regularly to local news reports. For more information visit www.cfa.vic.gov.au

The Officers and members of Whittlesea Fire Brigade wish all a very happy and safe holiday.

CFA Sunday - Brigade Open Day

CFA Sunday was held on Sunday 20th November at the Whittlesea Fire Brigade where fire station was open to the public to come and speak to our volunteers about the upcoming fire season, how to prepare for the fire season and to answer any questions or concerns they may have had.

A highlight for the younger visitors to the station was the ability to play with a fire hose and squirt some water, a few bystanders got a nice mist of the fog spray but it was well worth it!.   Read more, and see photos by clicking here.
